Tom Waits Glitter and Doom Tour

It’s announced: Tom Waits will tour US and Europe this year. Being a huge Tom Waits fan (physically, I’m not really that huge, although some people would argue that I have a considerably sized ego – don’t listen to them) I will definitely take a trip to see at least one of his concerts. Totally unique and original, he’s no doubt up there with Bob Dylan. Althogh it sure is tempting to call him a legend or even genius, I think labels like that are best suited for dead people. And considering the fact that Waits is far from dead, I rather see him as an intriguing human being who makes great art.

And oh, I almost forgot to mention that this tour probably will be complemented by the release of a new studio album.

Check out this cool video from his Press Conference:

snow sculpture workshop

From 27th January to 2nd of February I participated in the annual snow sculpture workshop at Hovden in Setesdalen, Norway. It was an exiting and inspiring week for me, and I will definitely work with snow or ice again. I am already considering making a snow sculpture as a part of my continuing project A towering Obsession (for info on this particular project, check out the “visual art” section).

This year 30 artists were participating in the workshop, nine of which were experienced ice and snow sculptors and worked as team leaders in an effort to make seven sculptures in snow and two in ice. I worked with Lotte Karlsen from Norway and Julia Orlando from Australia, who was team leader and also responsible for the main design of our abstracted treehouse structure.

The workshop was initiated by Ole Morten Rokvam and Agder Kunstnersenter. Photos from the work process as well as from the opening on 2nd February can be found here. Photos will also be added gradually as the sculptures are melting down.

A poem – window frame

you put the news clipping
and the death records aside
and look through a decaying window frame

the radio promises a cold winter
the flowers have already
fallen out of their beds
and the only tree in the garden
cannot find as much as a clothesline
to reach out for

you walk back and forth over the gravel
not knowing what direction to take
with these new slippers
